More than a dozen Los Angeles Lakers employees learned Wednesday they had been laid off due to reorganization under new franchise leadership, according to a report from ESPN. These employees worked within the marketing, team communications, team content and corporate partnerships departments.

Ever since Mark Walter purchased the franchise for $10 billion in October, the Lakers have undergone multiple changes on the business side. Walter replaced the Buss family, who were the majority owners of the Lakers for nearly 50 years.

Walter Wants to Integrate Lakers and Dodgers Together

Walter is also the majority owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, and he is working to integrate the two franchises together.

Two Dodgers executives, Farhan Zaidi and Andrew Friedman, took on advisory roles within the Lakers organization in November. Then, former Dodgers executive Lon Rosen replaced long-time Lakers president Tim Harris as president of business operations in February.

In addition to those hires, the Lakers hired Michael Spetner as chief strategy and growth officer, Ryan Kantor as vice president of global partnerships and Tony Bennett as a draft consultant and advisor.

Most recently, the Lakers hired Rohan Ramadas as an assistant general manager under president and general Rob Pelinka on Monday. Ramadas is taking on one of the two assistant GM positions the Lakers plan to fill this summer.

The second assistant GM will reportedly be responsible for “pro scouting, draft scouting, player development.”
