Through the 2024-25 season, the Los Angeles Lakers have had a total of 506 players suit up for them, going back to their days in Minneapolis. Some were forgettable, some were serviceable, some were good and a select few were flat-out legendary.
During the Lakers' 80th season of existence (they were founded back in 1946 as the Detroit Gems in the National Basketball League), LeBron Wire is taking a look at each player who has worn their jersey, whether it has been a purple and gold one or the ones they donned back in the Midwest during their early years.
Mike Smrek came to the Lakers early in the 1986-87 season after spending his rookie year in the NBA with the Chicago Bulls. A seven-foot, 250-pound center who was originally from Canada, he didn't get a lot of playing time, but when he got on the court, he contributed as a backup to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
He played two seasons with the Lakers and averaged 2.5 points, 1.5 rebounds and 0.7 blocks in 7.9 minutes a game during that time. In both of his years with the team, it won the NBA championship.
Smrek was traded to the San Antonio Spurs in 1988, and he spent four more seasons in the league before continuing his basketball career in Europe. During his NBA tenure, he averaged 2.9 points, 2.2 rebounds and 0.8 blocks in 9.7 minutes per game.
