May 26—ROCHESTER — The names and faces change, but the team to beat in Section 1, Class 2A girls golf rarely does.

Lake City has owned the section championship trophy this decade, winning it each of the past five years, a stretch that included the program's first two state championships, in 2021 and 2022.

The Tigers are again in the driver's seat after the opening round of this year's section meet, but four other teams loaded with talent are right on Lake City's heels.

The Tigers shot an opening-round 332 on Tuesday at Northern Hills Golf Course to take a seven-shot lead over second-place Rochester Lourdes at the halfway point of the meet. The final round for the girls is Thursday at Northern Hills.

All four of the Tigers' scorers finished in the top 10 individually Tuesday, led by Alayna Atkinson and Julia Huettl, who are tied for fifth place (82). Taylor Davidson is in seventh place (83) and seventh-grader Ellie Kohrs is tied for ninth in her first section meet, after shooting 85.

Pine Island/Zumbrota-Mazeppa (342) sits in third, while Red Wing (343) and Caledonia (346) round out the top five.

Prior to Lake City's run of five straight section titles, Red Wing controlled the section. The Wingers have a little ground to make up — 11 shots — but they are led by the individual co-leader after Round 1, Hallie Johnson. She and Pine Island/Zumbrota-Mazeppa standout Neva Anderson both fired rounds of 5-over 77, giving them a slim one-shot lead over Lourdes' Paige Moeschler (78) and three shots over Winona's Kali Thompson (80).

Lourdes sits second as a team, thanks to Moeschler's strong round, and scores in the 80s from Allison Deutsch (84), Lily Dehnavifar (88) and Kendell Powell (89).

Thursday's final round is set to begin at 10:30 a.m.

The first round of the Section 1-2A boys meet is set for Wednesday at Northern Hills.

ROCHESTER — Addison McCabe and Jentrey Schreiber have been in this position before.

The standout golfers from Lanesboro know what it takes to get to the Class 1A state meet. They did it a year ago, as did then-senior Ellie McCabe.

With Ellie having graduated last spring, Schreiber and Addison McCabe have enhanced their leadership roles. Add that to improved play by the Burros' second junior and two sophomores in the varsity lineup, and it makes Lanesboro a tough team to top.

The Burros showed off their depth on Tuesday at Eastwood Golf Course, putting together a round of 374 as a team to take the lead at the halfway mark of the Section 1, Class 1A meet. Rushford-Peterson has made the meet a two-team race, though, as the Trojans came in at 376 on Tuesday, and sit just two strokes back of the leaders heading into Wednesday's final round, which is scheduled for 9 a.m. Wednesday at Eastwood.

McCabe shot an opening-round 83, which puts her in second place individually, while Schreiber's 92 is good for fourth place. Junior Grace Tufte added a 94 (tie-seventh place) and Prailey Wilford's 105 rounded out the Burros' first-day scoring.

R-P was just as formidable, though. It's led by Adalyn Colbenson, who shot an 88 and is in third place. Brynn Dvorak and Ella Diersen both added rounds of 93 (tied for fifth individually), and Addison Drinkall shot a 99 to round out the Trojans' top four.

Another golfer who is no stranger to this position is Hayfield's Carly Bronson.

The talented senior, and Southwest Minnesota State University commit, jumped to the front of the pack on Tuesday with a 7-over-par 78, giving her a five-stroke advantage entering the final 18 holes. Her opening round included 10 pars and two birdies. Her teammate, Ellamae Ohman is in a tie for seventh place with Lanesboro's Tufte (94).
