Lady Vols basketball guard Avery Mills will be "sidelined for an extended period of time" with a right knee injury, Tennessee coach Kim Caldwell announced July 7.
The 5-foot-9 junior suffered the injury during a team skill workout on June 30, according to the school release. Mills was the first of 13 players to commit to the Lady Vols out of the transfer portal this spring, transferring to Tennessee from Liberty.
Mills is one of the best shooters the Lady Vols added to the roster. She's the most accurate shooter of the new additions, shooting 43.8% on her career and 42.7% on 7.4 attempts last season – which was nearly five more attempts per game than her freshman season when she shot 46.2%.
She was Liberty's leading scorer last season, averaging 15.3 points, four rebounds and 2.2 assists in 30.7 minutes per game. Mills was a All-CUSA First Team selection last season.
Mills played against Tennessee in Knoxville as a freshman and scored 19 points on 7-for-9 shooting, including 3-for-5 on 3-pointers. She added two assists, one rebound and one steal in 20 minutes. Tennessee won the game 109-93 on Nov. 16, 2024.
The Lynchburg, Virginia, native was the only freshman to appear in all 33 games, and she averaged 6.8 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.4 assists while shooting 51.9% from the field.
Mills graduated from Liberty Christian Academy, where she led the team to its first-ever state title her senior season. She scored 2,759 points and surpassed 1,000 rebounds and 500 assists in her high school career.
