HIGH POINT – T.W. Andrews capitalized down the stretch against Bishop McGuinness.
The Lady Raiders scored 20 of the game's final 22 points to surge past the Villains 46-34 in a meeting of two of the area's top girls basketball programs Saturday afternoon in Andrews' Foree Gymnasium.
"They were getting a lot of tips and deflections. But that's credit to them. That's what they do really well," Andrews coach John Shearin said. "They speed you up and we were sped up.
"Then in the third to fourth quarter, we started to slow down a little bit and be a little bit more poised. We made our free throws and started to play a little bit better. Still room to grow – definitely room to grow."
Sam King scored 23 points to lead the Lady Raiders (14-4), ranked No. 19 in the state overall and No. 1 among NCHSAA 4A teams. Jayda Harris added eight points, while Janiya Milligan followed with seven points.
"I feel like we did good as a team," said King, a senior guard. "We were disciplined. We were doing good on defense and ball offering. Everything was going together."
Andrews trailed by as much as 11 in the first half, rallied in the third but still trailed by six with 6 1/2 minutes left in the game. But a flurry of plays started going its way in the final four minutes to rally for a challenging win.
The Lady Raiders scored on eight of their final 10 possessions while limiting Bishop to just one score. They forced scores of turnovers and misses, plus had a handful of blocks as their size and speed took over.
"I want to say we turned on the switch," King said. "We started scoring more. We got some blocks. Janiya got a rebound. And that changed the game.
"Coach was like, 'You need to lock in.' And, 'Do what we're told.' Practice is harder than the games. So we were doing everything we practice."
Andrews took the lead on a jumper with 3:41 left and led by four on a three-point play with just under three minutes left. Morgan Aho made a right-hand shot in the key with 2 1/2 minutes left to keep the Villains within two.
But the Lady Raiders – highlighted by key plays from Harris, Milligan and King down the stretch – scored the final 10 points of the game to seal it.
Claire Sullivan scored 14 points to lead Bishop (14-3), ranked No. 30 in the state overall and No. 4 among NCHSAA 2A teams. Cecilia Drabik followed with seven points, while Laney Heafner had six points.
"We missed a layup and they hit a 3 right before halftime," Villains coach Brian Robinson said. "And I was little concerned because you know how momentum works.
"When you play a good team that's been off like we have and they start getting their legs underneath them, it becomes: Who has the better athletes? Who's a little taller?"
Bishop did have its positives as it moves forward – scoring the first nine points of the game, limiting Andrews to just two points in the first and building a double-digit lead in the second.
"We learned a lot about ourselves," Robinson said. "We're good enough to play with these teams. And we're going to run into someone like this in the playoffs.
"When we have a chance to get some distance early, we need to take advantage of that. But I think we got more out of this game in a positive way than negative. It's like I told them – it's a 'lose the battle, win the war' type of deal."
Both teams will look to maintain their conference leads this week. The Lady Raiders will visit Montgomery Central on Tuesday and High Point Central on Friday and host Ledford on Wednesday in PAC Seven 4A/5A play.
The Villains, after hosting South Stokes on Monday, will host North Stokes on Wednesday and Chatham Central on Thursday before visiting South Davidson on Friday in Greater Triad 1A/2A Conference action.
