Julie Iles, the long-time softball coach at Cumberland County High School, said she couldn’t be more pleased with her team than she was last week when the Lady Jets opened the 2026 season with a 13-5 victory over Oneida.

The Lady Jets had eight hits on the night, with seven runs batted in and no errors. On the other side of the scoreboard, CCHS allowed Oneida five runs on nine hits.

“I think this game was definitely a confidence booster, especially coming right out of the gate,” said Iles. “It is key for us to just be able to get out there and show that everything they’ve been doing in all the offseason is worth something.

“It gives us confidence and shows us the hard work wasn’t as bad as we had built it up to be in our heads. We believe we can do it.”

Cumberland County took the early lead with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. CCHS got big hits from Emily Shelton, Kara Welters and Vada Burnett to get the offense started.

Oneida responded with two runs off Cumberland County pitcher Olivia Torrelli in the top of the second inning. However, CCHS came right back in the bottom of the third inning with four more runs to make it 8-2.

Skylynn Houser came up with a double to lead the charge for CCHS. Emily Tollett contributed a hit, as did Raylynn Adams and Anna Marie Rios.

“Hitting was something we struggled with last year, so that was something we spent a lot of time working on in the offseason,” said Iles. “I think just working on the mentality of an at-bat itself has really changed the game for us. We had hits against Oneida, but we were also very selective at the plate.

“We weren’t just swinging at anything that was coming across. That was something we pushed with these girls. We don’t want them to just swing at everything because they feel like they have to. We want them to go into an at-bat with the right mentality.”

Oneida score five runs in the top of the fifth inning to cut into the Cumberland County lead, and pull within one at 8-7. The Lady Jets weren’t frustrated. With big plate appearances from Shelton, Welters and Burnett, CCHS began to pull away. Houser and Adams came up with key hits, and Cumberland County came up with five more runs to post the 13-5 final.

“Our defense has improved so much over last season,” Iles said. “That’s one thing I thought we did well.”

Houser set the pace for Cumberland County. She had two runs and two hits on two trips to the plate. She also knocked in two runs. CCHS also got hits from Shelton, Welters, Burnett, Tollett, Adams and Rios.

Torrelli managed the game well in the circle for the Lady Jets. She gave up all five runs on nine hits. She walked three and struck out five.
