At the beginning of the season, there was a strong argument to be made that not only were the Philadelphia Phillies one of the worst teams in Major League Baseball, but that there was going to be a major problem for this organization in the long term because of how poorly they were playing on both sides of the ball.

Offensively, the Phillies weren't doing anything anyone was hoping for, though the starting pitching was also average due to injuries.

Sadly, that rough start definitely put the Phillies in a strange position to win the division, and while there's still an opportunity for them to do so if they start playing better, that one bad month definitely put them in a position not to win the division.

The Atlanta Braves have also been playing great baseball, and there's something to be said about that. Unfortunately for the Phillies, they're going to need to do a lot more over the next few months if they want any chance to win the division.

Nonetheless, all the Phillies can worry about is coming out and playing the type of baseball everybody knows they can, and they've done that since firing Rob Thomson. However, when speaking to reporters, Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber admitted that Philadelphia's play at the beginning of the season is still on all players' minds.

“We keep that in the back of our heads, right?” Schwarber said, per The Athletic. “We know that we’re all going to get going at some point. And it’s gonna be fun, it’s going to be a lot of runs. Then there will be those (down) times, and it’ll be great to go back to the time we just had in the last three weeks. And feel like, ‘Man, we found ways to win games.’ There will be times like that again throughout the year. And I like that experience for us and our pitchers...

“I think of the meaningful times of the games where it’s, like, they just scored,” Schwarber said. “And we come right back and answer right back. I feel like those are kind of the big things for us.”

I was definitely a bit skeptical about the Phillies turning things around because of how poorly they were playing.

However, I think they proved to us once again that they're going to be a decent team when it matters most, and now all it's going to come down to is whether they can get into the postseason and get hot at the right time. That might be easier said than done, but there are some very good players in the organization who should be able to do that.
