Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Zack Wheeler was shockingly not invited to the All-Star Game, at least not yet.
There's hope that the league will eventually give Wheeler an opportunity to play in the All-Star Game in front of his home crowd, as that would be well deserved. However, that will ultimately be up to commissioner Rob Manfred and the rest of Major League Baseball.
For now, that isn't the case, so we can continue to talk about how big of a snub this really was.
Wheeler, who recognizes that he was, throughout parts of the year, as elite as it gets on the mound, has been one of the best starters in Major League Baseball over the past few seasons, and even coming back from injury, he's been just as good as anybody could have imagined. He's a frontline starter and deserves to play in front of his home crowd.
Speaking to reporters about it, he and Kyle Schwarber weren't very happy about the decision, which I really don't think anybody can disagree with, unless they're not fans of the Phillies.
"For sure," Wheeler said after the win, when asked if he was pitching with a little bit of an edge against the Reds, per ESPN. "That was a reminder for whoever needs to be reminded. So, it pisses me off, and it's kind of B.S. So, maybe if I wasn't necessarily right in there, I wouldn't be saying this. But I feel like I've earned it."
"It just sucks that we have to deal with it," Kyle Schwarber said. "We dealt with it last year, we dealt with it this year. When someone deserves it, someone that's putting up numbers deserves it, you want them to just get that nod."
I love that Schwarber came out and said this about his teammate. Not that he needed to come out and make any comments, but sticking up for his guy was the right thing to do.
It's also a very fair point, as Wheeler has been that good over the past few months after returning from injury. If he had come back and didn't play well, I can understand it, but with this game being in Philadelphia and him throwing the baseball at the level he has, it's an absolute joke he didn't get selected.
