The Pittsburgh Pirates called up star shortstop Konnor Griffin earlier this year, and the teenager has made an immediate impact.
Griffin has become the Pirates’ starting shortstop, and he’s been a key part of the offense. Although Griffin has gotten off to a hot start, he’s trailing in the Rookie of the Year case, as the odds have him fourth, and MLB.com experts agreed.
MLB.com polled 39 experts who ranked their top five picks in each league on a 5-4-3-2-1 scale, and Griffin was fourth and received just two first-place votes, in an article published on Tuesday.
“Through Sunday, Griffin's nine stole bases were most among NL rookies, while he was tied for first in triples (two) and tied for fourth in hits (32) and RBIs (19),” the article read. “He was hitting .316 with a .913 OPS over his past 10 games through Sunday. This included a four-hit game against the Reds on May 2. Overall, he's his safely in 11 of his past 12 games.”
New York Mets starter Nolan McLean is the favorite in both odds and the experts picks, followed by Sal Stewart, and JJ Wetherholt.
The Pirates last saw Paul Skenes win the Rookie of the Year award in 2024.
As for Griffin, he’s hitting .256 with 3 home runs and 19 RBIs. He signed a nine-year, $140 million deal with the Pirates shortly after debuting.
