Konnor Griffin contract details: Pirates phenom finalizing largest deal in franchise history before playing single MLB game originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

The Pirates are wasting no time locking down their future. On Thursday, the franchise announced that it was promoting SS Konnor Griffin -- baseball's No. 1 prospect -- to the big-league roster. With the announcement, Griffin becomes the first teenager to play an MLB game since Junior Caminero was called up in 2023.

The hits kept on coming for Pittsburgh on Thursday, with ESPN's Buster Olney reporting that the Bucs were nearing a record contract with Griffin. The deal has yet to be finalized, per Olney. However, its terms would see Griffin, still just 19 years old, take home more money than any Pirate has in franchise history.

Konnor Griffin contract details

  • Years: Nine
  • Value: $140 million

The Pirates' proposed deal will see Griffin earn $140 million over nine years, good for an average annual value (AAV) of $15.55 million. Olney reported that Pittsburgh's initial proposals were "closer in the range" to the eight-year, $111 million deal Corbin Carroll inked with the Diamondbacks in 2023.

Griffin and his negotiating team, by comparison, sought a contract closer to the eight-year, $130 million contract Roman Anthony landed with the Red Sox last August.

It seems Griffin's side won out. His new deal easily takes the cake as the franchise's largest-ever contract handed out, surpassing the eight-year, $106.5 million deal the Pirates agreed to with Bryan Reynolds in 2023.

There's a case to be made that Griffin is missing out on money, too. If Griffin is able to live up to his potential, he likely would have commanded a contract worth double or triple the amount he is due to sign for.
