PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Pirates are downplaying the right forearm strain that has prevented Konnor Griffin from playing in the field the past two games. So is the rookie shortstop.
“We’re just being careful and giving it a little rest,” Griffin told Pirates Roundtable on Friday night following a 6-5 victory over the Minnesota Twins at PNC Park. “I’ll be fine. It’s nothing to worry about.”
Griffin was the designated hitter on Friday and went 2 for 4 with an RBI and two stolen bases.
“We’re still going to be day to day, evaluating him from a throwing standpoint,” Pittsburgh manager Don Kelly said. “But really cool to see him in there as DH and make an impact on the game.”
The Pirates signed Griffin to a nine-year, $140-million contract last month after he was universally ranked as the top prospect in baseball coming into the season. The 20-year-old is hitting .266/.325/.397 with four home runs and 14 stolen bases in 50 games.
It seems likely Pittsburgh will get right fielder Ryan O’Hearn back shortly. He has been taking batting practice and running the last few days.
O’Hearn, who has been on the injured list with a right quad strain since May 17, has a .289/.368/.459 slash line with seven homers in 44 games. The Pirates signed him to a two-year, $29-mllion contract as a free agent in the offseason.
A timetable has yet to be established for catcher Joey Bart’s return from the IL. He has been sidelined since May 10 with a left foot infection.
Bart is playing catch and lifting weights, and is likely to start running and hitting at some point next week during a road trip to Houston and Atlanta. In 21 games, Bart is batting .259/.290/.379 with two home runs.
Sidelined since May 3 because of an illness, veteran reliever Chris Devenski has started working out at Pittsburgh's spring training facility in Bradenton, Fla. He has appeared in three games this season and has a 7.71 ERA.
Additionally, third baseman Nick Gonzalez was in the lineup on Friday night and went 1 for 4. He left Thursday night’s loss to the Chicago Cubs after three innings with left knee discomfort.
