As the saying goes, shooters shoot, and that's something Klay Thompson has proven throughout his career. It's also something that a few notable contenders hope he can provide for them in the 2026-27 season. Thompson has been at the center of rumored trade conversations and buzz about a potential buyout from the Dallas Mavericks, which has fueled intense speculation about what could be on the horizon for the 36-year-old. Among the teams linked to Thompson are the Los Angeles Lakers and Miami Heat, both of which would be ideal fits for the sharpshooter.
In Thompson's second season as a member of the Mavericks, he averaged a career low in minutes per game (21.7), but still shot 38.3% from three-point range, and there's little doubt that the Lakers, Heat, and several other potential contenders could benefit from adding him.
However, there's been a bit of a pause regarding Thompson's immediate future, and it appears there's a very good reason for that.
While Thompson and the Mavericks haven't agreed to a buyout yet, it seems this could stem from the interest of the Lakers and Heat, as longtime NBA reporter Jake Fischer explained on Bleacher Report. In short, Dallas would understandably like to trade Thompson and get something in return for the veteran, although it's unclear how likely that is as the 2026-27 season approaches.
However, on the flip side, it looks like the Lakers and Heat are ready and willing to play the waiting game to potentially push to sign Thompson after a buyout.
As Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald reported, the Heat appear likely to be patient before filling out the rest of the roster while waiting to see if Thompson can reach a buyout.
"It appears that the Heat will remain patient in filling out the rest of its roster to give Thompson time to possibly shake free through a buyout agreement," Chiang wrote. "While a trade for Thompson is also possible, it would be challenging to pull off considering the only three players on the Heat’s current roster able to be traded for Thompson in a one-for-one deal are Nikola Jovic, Davion Mitchell and Bobby Portis."
While the Heat's interest is apparent, another report could pose an issue for Miami as they await word on Thompson's future. According to The Athletic's Christian Clark, Thompson, who still owns a home in Los Angeles, would "welcome" a return to L.A. this offseason.
"My understanding is that Thompson would welcome a return to Los Angeles, where he spent part of his childhood and still owns a home," Clark wrote. "The Miami Heat are another team frequently mentioned in NBA circles as a potential landing spot for the future Hall of Famer."
Obviously, Thompson can't weigh a decision until a possible buyout happens, but he'll unquestionably be one of the top names to watch in the coming weeks. And if the Mavericks and Thompson part ways, that's when things will get really interesting as the NBA offseason winds down.
