Just by mentioning that our #3 WR is going to break out implies that Matty is going to have some success.

Calais Campbell, Arizona Cardinals, DE: He is a rare athlete and a guy that went from zero sacks to seven last season, four of which were half sacks. He also had five passes defensed at 6-foot-8. In talking with him about this article, he's so humble and focused on being great that he might be my lock to make it.

Such a good guy.

Early Doucet, Arizona Cardinals, WR: Part of the reason the Cardinals felt they could trade Anquan Boldin was Doucet's development. His numbers are still low but he will make a big jump in production.

Hoping for a great year. :newcards:

What about Toler?

I doubt most people know of him. Most of his good work was spotted by coaches after watching film, but I don't think he ever had a defining moment you could point to and say, "Man, that kid is really becoming a player." DRC, on the other hand, was a regular on ESPN highlights.

Wow Kirwan is really going out on a limb with that Campbell prediction.

Campbell's break out year was last year.

I don't consider what Campbell did last year as breaking out (into a star). Last year he gave good numbers but he didn't put up pro bowl numbers which is what I consider "breaking out."

he would have had he not missed 5-6 sacks that he let the QB get out of his grasp.

He did put up pro bowl #s. His numbers were better than Darnell Docketts! HD most certainly played at a pro bowl level all year!

Campbell: 37 Solo tackles 7 Sacks 1 FF 5 Passes defensed
Dockett: 42 Solo tackles 7 Sacks 1 INT1 Fumble recovered 2 Passes defensed

His numbers were not better than Dockett's. At best they were equal.

I personally didn't think Dockett's numbers would make him a pro bowler either. Guess it helps that he made it as a 4-3 DT while playing 3-4 DE. 7 Sacks as a DE wouldn't get him in the pro bowl. Campbell would have been a DE in the pro bowl not a DT I am assuming.

He also had 3 FG blocks who knows how many batted passes at the line & about 3 sacks left on the field unlike DD. If DD is making the PB with his play then CC was certainly worthy last year. 7 sacks for a 3-4 DE is a pretty big #.

If the question at hand is: "Who do you feel is likely to have a breakout year, it doesn't matter about which coaches a dude has impressed or whose radar screen he's flying beneath. All we need to focus on is: "Who's most likely to light it up in 2010?"

Beanie (Builds off good rookie year; more touches)

Doucet (Q gone; showed he can play the position and make key grabs by the end of last season)

Campbell (Builds off 2 impressive seasons. Has both the size and skill to excel)

Toler (Job opening at one corner. raw as rain as a rookie but played with poise in playoffs and, in addition to demonstrating good ball skills, showed a love for sticking his nose in there).

Other conceivable breakout seasons -

Leinart (Opportunity; tools; receivers).

Keith (Job opening at RT)

C Brown (2nd round pick rebounding from injury)

W Davis (Good rookie season; depends on how much action he sees)

Outsiders - I don't think R Johnson is positioned to make a splash (aside from needing to step up, he's unlikely to beat out Rhodes or A-Dub for playing time). You never know about this year's rookies - maybe a couple of guys like D Williams or Washington could make a big splash in 2010 but I doubt it.

He probably didnt put Wells in there because Campbell doesnt have to split time like wells does with Hightower.

7 sacks are great numbers for a 3-4 DE, no other 3-4 DE had more sacks than CC/Dock and Justin Smith is the only guy that had more QB pressures than CC. He was easily playing at a Pro Bowl level as a 3-4 DE.

I agree those are great 3-4 DE numbers, but the pro bowl is run in a 4-3 only format, and the majority of fans vote with a 4-3 bias from my experience. Typical fan voter looks at the ballot and sees "DE Campbell 7 sacks, DE Will smith 13 sacks" and votes for Smith, if they aren't voting on a completely homerism basis. This hurts 3-4 DEs as I was trying to explain, but Dockett was voted in as a DT, where his 7 sacks were relatively higher as no DT had more sacks than him this year. If Campbell were listed at DT he would have likely either been voted in or at least had much more respect in the fan portion of the voting.

Again, if you are a 4-3 DE, 7 sacks isn't pro bowl worthy most of the time. If you are a 4-3 DT it is. 3-4 numbers don't really matter much since players are listed in their 4-3 positions and competing with other 4-3 players at those positions. Is that fair to Campbell? No way, but he is likely going to have to get 10+ sacks or force a ton of turn overs to get voted in as a DE.
