Whisenhunt up for 2nd interview

The Cardinals continued working through their short list of coaching candidates Thursday, interviewing former Packers coach Mike Sherman a second time and setting up a second interview with Steelers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt for today.

Sherman, the Texans assistant head coach, met with Cardinals officials for most of the day and was scheduled to return to Houston in the evening.

Whisenhunt's availability this week is a surprise. He is a contender for the Steelers job, which opened when Bill Cowher resigned last week. But the Steelers apparently are going to take more time filling the job than most people expected. advertisement

They have scheduled an interview with Georgia Tech coach Chan Gailey for Saturday and might be interested in talking to coaches involved in the playoffs this weekend.

That could leave Whisenhunt and Russ Grimm, another Steelers assistant who has interviewed with the Cardinals, in a difficult situation. If they wait for a decision from the Steelers, they could miss out on other jobs, including the Cardinals'.

Cardinals officials, who weren't available for comment Thursday, interviewed eight candidates and this week narrowed their search to a short list.

They won't say how many coaches are on the list, but NFL sources said team officials still think highly of Titans offensive coordinator Norm Chow and Chargers offensive coordinator Cam Cameron.

The Cardinals interviewed Cameron last weekend in San Diego and can't talk to him again until the Chargers are through with the playoffs. If the Chargers are eliminated, the Cardinals could talk to Cameron again early next week.

It's unlikely the Cardinals would hire a coach before next week, unless Whisenhunt overwhelms them in today's interview. Chances are the Cardinals would like to talk to one or two coaches in the playoffs, and if their teams lose this weekend, the club could interview them early next week.

Contrary to some reports, owner Bill Bidwill has been closely involved in the search and participated in every interview, including the ones with Cameron in San Diego, with Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera in Chicago and with Colts assistant head coach/quarterbacks Jim Caldwell in Indianapolis.

There were erroneous reports Thursday that the Cardinals had offered Sherman the job. Sherman does remain a viable candidate, however.

The ultimate irony. It might be the only reason Chow is still in the running is because Bill Bidwill is taking part in the interviews and he is probably Chow's best chance for getting hired. Some of the Chow supporters on here bashed Mr. B unmercifully yesterday when everyone thought Sherman had been hired. Now Chow's best chance is for Mr. B to step in and insist on him being HC. That really has to gall some people.

There's nothing like wildly speculating about what you think ownership is thinking and then trashing them for it.

I believe Mr. Chow's best chance is for him to emerge as the candidate who can best help the Cardinals. Maybe this will happen, maybe it won't. We don't know what ownership is thinking.

Bet you a dollar that right now ownership is thinking about bow ties and ice cream.

The Rooney rule on interviewing of minorities requests that the owner be involved with the interview process. The fact that Mr. B has been involved with all of the candidates makes sense.

About time for Mr. B to take a trip to Europe for a week like the time we were in the middle of a negotiating for some player or coach a few years ago. Everything sort of came to a stop. This will give him time to clear his head and think on it. After all the longer you wait to make a decision the better it will be. That is a rule all of us fighter pilots live by (or die by). Especially when your only engine just quit and you are at 1000' AGL and you need to eject or try an engine restart while descending at 1500' per minute.

If you try the engine restart and it doesn't work, you are pretty much toast. 40 seconds can go by rather quickly when your life is flashing in front of your eyes.

Still working but retired from flying. I go out to the L.R. AFB every month. They are the largest (maybe the only) C-130 training base in the country.

It doesn't suck compared to when this board was stuck debating about Josh McNown.

I still think people vastly underrate his jumpshot. All that talk about his dunking sort of masked his real value as a basketball player.

That is what I thought.

Martz was on the right track moving him to WR, once they get him at shooting guard his career will really take off.
