Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette reports that Steelers linebackers coach Keith Butler has a clause in his contract that may prevent him from interviewing elsewhere.
Butler had been viewed as a prime candidate for the defensive coordinator job in Arizona, where he would team up with pal Ken Whisenhunt, but it sounds like the Steelers DC "coordinator in waiting" behind Dick LeBeau may not even get a chance to interview. Cardinals defensive backs coach Teryl Austin has been mentioned as another possibility for the coordinator job.

You saw that MAY sticking out like a sore thumb as well huh?

There also has to be way more to this "Coordinator in Waiting" Clause. What are the stipulations. What is the time frame written into the clause, does he have to be DC in Pitt this year, next year, two years from now. If he isnt does he have to be given a raise if Labeau doesnt retire or if he doesnt retire by this year, next year, or so on does the clause become null and void?

Jurecki reported that there is mutual interest with Butler. One would think that this clause has been taken in to consideration.

Fire Grimm as Assistant Head Coach - then interview Butler for Assistant Head Coach then after his hire then move him to DC with Assistant HC as his title.

I believe it would work.

Gregory Manusky (born August 12, 1966 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania) is the current American football defensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League. He is also a former player, playing linebacker for three teams over twelve years. Manusky played college football at Colgate University and high school football at Dallas High School.
Greg Manusky is the current Defensive Coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers football team. He has been the Linebackers coach for a few different NFL teams, and was hired in 2007 to be the 49ers Defensive Coordinator. In the 2008 season, when the previous Head Coach of the 49ers, Mike Nolan, was fired, the Assistant Head Coach/Linebackers Coach, Mike Singletary, took his place and finished the season for the 49ers as the Interim Coach. In the 2009 season Singletary was rehired to become the permanent Head Coach of the 49ers. Manusky has remained the Defensive Coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers as of the 2010 NFL season.

His defenses have been in the top 15 of the league 3 years running IIRC. All while having to deal with that PUTRID SF offense .

Not bad and a 3-4 resume.

Unfortunately I don't think we are interviewing him, I think he is interviewing us. This guy seems to have options and a doubt he will jump on the first offer.

Not as bad as you make it sound. It's not like we don't have talent on that side of the ball and if Whiz is leaning on going defensive player at #5, being DC here has a LOT of upside.

Just look at the smile and the laughing going on in this picture following a loss? Why would anyone want someone like that on this team? To many people on this board will be pissed with a hire like that because they have never cracked a smile or giggled just a bit during or after a loss.

Butler may suffer in the court of public opinion for that.

I don't know. Might be good to have a guy who knows all of the Niners defensive plays and their tendencies. They sure did tear up the Cards.

Umm all of the Niners defensive plays and scheme would likely be just a tad new with new HC and DC? Don't ya think?

Depends on who they get. Do you think an offense would change their whole playbook just because of a new coach? Unless you plan on changing their whole defensive scheme, a lot of the plays would remain the same.
