A packed backfield is now comically crowded, as Allen brings workhorse abilities to a team with four starter-capable running backs. My sense is that Ford will be the odd man out to start with.
He signed a cheap one-year contract and could probably latch on somewhere else as the #3 RB. Washington gave McNichols a little more money on a one-year deal, which might not matter, except that McNichols has looked good in a Commanders uniform these past two years. He’s a known commodity, unlike the newcomer Ford.
Croskey-Merritt isn’t going anywhere for a while. I publicly pushed last summer that he was a post-hype fantasy option who was being overdrafted. While that mostly held, I can’t deny that he looked terrific at times, and another year of seasoning could propel him to a consistent 1A role. We’ll see.
Meanwhile, White is a solid NFL workhorse who could easily lead this backfield in fantasy points. But there’s too much competition -- including from run-friendly QB Jayden Daniels -- to expect a career year from this former Buccaneers mainstay.
If Allen plays well in camp, he could slot in as the #3 RB. But a lot would have to go right for him (and a lot would have to go wrong for everyone else) for the rookie to make fantasy noise.
