Congratulations to the Denver Broncos for their playoff win against the Buffalo Bills. The win came at a high price. They will finish the year without their offensive leader, quarterback Bo Nix, who broke his ankle at the end of the game. Apparently, this is the third time he’s broken an ankle. Once in high school, once in college, and now with the Broncos. I often wondered why he avoided contact as much as he does. Now it makes sense, fragile ankles.
Most of my career we had Gary Kubiak as our backup quarterback. Gary was great. If free agency existed back then he would have been the starting quarterback for another team, but the Broncos owned his rights, so he stayed in Denver and made the best of his situation. He was a great scout team quarterback and would step up for us when Elway was sick or injured and always played well. We had a game against the Redskins in Washington and John went [to] the White House. Elway got food poisoning from their chipped beef on toast and couldn’t play. Gary stepped up and we beat the Skins on Monday Night Football with Kubiak at quarterback.
I’m not sure what Jarrett Stidham is going to do against the Patriots this week in the AFC Championship Game, but if the rest of the team steps up the Broncos have a chance. I didn’t get a chance to start until Rick Dennison got injured. Next man up is how most NFL players get their opportunity to play meaningful minutes in a game. Jumping in at the Championship Game level will be a challenge, but Jarrett’s started a few games in the past. He's got to see this as an opportunity to prove to his teammates on the Broncos and the Patriots organization who drafted him that he can play. Unfortunately, I think New England is too much for the Broncos. Patriots 28, Broncos 10. I hope I’m wrong. Go Broncos!
