Kansas State football has had a few names roaming around as projected standouts in 2026.
The biggest one on the defensive side? Incoming edge rusher Wendell Gregory. The former Oklahoma State standout got roughly his 50th laud of the offseason from ESPN, which ranked him No. 49 on its list of best transfer portal additions.
"Gregory came roaring out of the gate this season, then production slowed," the article wrote. "This will be his third move in as many years and could be reason for caution, but the tools to be a disruptive edge defender are certainly there. He can be a bit of a bull in a china shop at times and can refine his technique against the run, but he can quickly blow up plays."
Last season, Gregory had 27 total tackles, 12 for losses, and four sacks. He was named the Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year, standing out as the sole positive on a miserable Cowboys defense.
He will be the replacement for star edge rusher Tobi Osunsanmi, who was on track for a monster year until his mid-season injury.
"Gregory had been linked to Texas Tech, Texas, Missouri, and several other teams during his recruitment and ultimately chose to stay in the Big 12 and join a defense that was searching for a difference-maker off the edge to help replace departed transfer Tobi Osunsanmi," the article wrote.
The Wildcats' defensive line has been arguably their most consistent position over the past few seasons, with Big 12 standouts like Felix Anudike-Uzomah, Osunsanmi, and Brendan Mott anchoring the edge. Kansas State coach Collin Klein lauds this as another position to watch next season to bounce back in 2026.
"We probably have more depth on the edge," Klein said in his first spring ball press conference. "Been really happy with some of those guys. You’ve got four or five guys who have flashed at times and done some really nice things, so I think that will give us some flexibility. Every one of them has improved drastically, and part of that is how hard we’ve practiced and put those shoulder pads on and focused on winning at the line of scrimmage."
