A lot has been said about how new Kansas State Wildcats coach Collin Klein has already improved the football program.
The most common assessment from players about the new coaching staff is energy. At 36, Klein is among the youngest coaches in college football. Players have said the youth movement has made a friendlier work environment.
"We have a lot more energy," quarterback Avery Johnson told the KC Sports Network at Big 12 Media Days. "I feel like our coaches are younger. They bring more energy to practices."
The Wildcats are trying to move on from coach Chris Klieman, who unexpectedly resigned following last season. Klein moves over after serving as the offensive coordinator for the Texas A & M Aggies. He was a star quarterback for the Wildcats during the early 2010s, including being a Heisman Trophy finalists his senior season.
EX-WILDCATS STAR READY FOR BIG LEAGUES
Ex-Kansas State shortstop Dee Kennedy experienced the highs and lows of college baseball during his career.
After struggling during his freshman and sophomore years, he finally had a breakout as a junior. He hit .357 with a school-record 20 home runs on the way to being drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals with the No. 114 pick in the MLB Draft.
That drew the praise of Jim Callis of the MLB Network. He was impressed with the way Kennedy improved over the years.
"He might be the most improved player in college baseball this year," Callis said. "As a freshman at Texas, he hit .209. Then he goes to K-State, as a sophomore he leads the Big 12 with 75 strikeouts. So I guess he's a great advertisement for Lasik. He had Lasik surgery and he starts seeing the ball better. He winds up being a Cape Cop All-Star and then goes back to K-State as a junior and sets the single-season home run record."
ALCOHOL NOW ALLOWED AT FOOTBALL GAMES
Kansas State Wildcats football fans will now be able to enjoy an alcoholic beverage during games this season.
The school announced Thursday it will allow alcoholic sales at Bill Snyder Family Stadium this fall. Prior to the announcement, drinks were only sold at designated tailgate areas outside of the stadium.
"This has been a topic that we have carefully researched for years," K-State Athletic Director Taylor said. "We always want to keep our student-athletes and fans at the forefront of every decision we make, and that was the driver in this decision as well. While it will provide our department with additional revenue during this new era of collegiate athletics, it will also be a key piece in maintaining a competitive advantage by keeping more fans in their seats throughout the entirety of games. This is a big decision, and we will be prepared to adjust as we see fit in future seasons."
