Professional wrestling and football have been linked together since the 90's, when Lawrence Taylor famously wrestled Bam Bam Bigelow in the main event of Wrestlemania 11. Since then, it has become commonplace to see football players sitting alongside the guardrail when the WWE comes to their town. Last night showed that this tradition still stands.
WWE's SummerSlam took place at U.S. Bank Stadium, home of the Minnesota Vikings, over the weekend. Before the main event, a World Heavyweight Championship match between Roman Reigns (c) and Seth Rollins, wide receiver Justin Jefferson got the crowd hyped up by standing on one of the announcer desks and grabbing the microphone.
In recent years, we have seen multiple basketball players even step foot inside the ring for physical interactions, most notably Karl Anthony-Towns inside Madison Square Garden a few weeks ago. Jason Kelce, former Philadelphia Eagles center, ran in on a match at Wrestlemania 40 a few years ago.
Maybe we'll see a Viking try their hand in the ring someday.
