Nazem Kadri seems incredibly likely to get traded.

The Calgary Flames' center has been heavily involved in trade rumors, and as he ages midway through his contract, it makes sense for the rebuilding Flames to extract as much value as they can get for him now before it's too late.

It sounds like there's just one thing holding up a potential deal: money.

Sportsnet's Nick Kypreos explained in his new trade board article that the Flames don't want to be responsible for any of Kadri's remaining salary.

"The Flames do not want to eat any of the remaining money and, for now, that’s the only thing keeping him in Calgary," Kypreos writes. "Kadri has a 13-team no-trade list, but he’s willing to waive that if it means taking a run at another Cup."

There's enough interest in Kadri that it seems like at least one team that wants him would take all the money on in order to get a deal done.

"Calgary has been playing hardball on this the whole time and now we're down to the final days for them to make a call," Kypreos writes. "There are six teams believed to be in on this, including Dallas, Carolina and Montreal."

Deadlines often create urgency. The NHL's trade deadline is March 6.

Kadri is certainly still good enough to be worth some cost to acquire.

"There is always a need for centres around the league, and Kadri would seem to hit a lot of the right notes," Kypreos writes. "He’s still productive, leading Calgary in scoring, he’s got plenty of playoff experience, and he’s won the Stanley Cup. The complicated part of this is that his contract goes on for another three seasons, and teams are cautious about taking on that full freight."

Kadri isn't the perfect acquisition, but he's what's available. If he isn't moved by the deadline, that'd be a major surprise.
