WOW. It felt like everything was done at the 2026 NHL trade deadline -- we recapped all the big deals, we declared who were the winners and losers...
And then? News of the Calgary Flames dealing Nazem Kadri back to the Colorado Avalanche -- where he won a Stanley Cup -- dropped. It's a big deal for the Avalanche, who get back a hard-nosed center who can help with playoff hockey and scoring. After this and the Nicolas Roy trade, Colorado is absolutely stacked at center.
As for the Flames? It was smart to deal the 35-year-old Kadri, who has a contract worth $7M AAV through 2029.
Let's hand out some grades and break down the deal with the details:
Avalanche get: C Nazem Kadri, a 2027 fourth-round pick
Flames get: F Victor Olofsson, F Maximilian Curran, 2027 second-round pick, 2028 first-round pick
The Avalanche know exactly what they're getting in Kadri, and with Stanley Cup aspirations, this is big deal. Even with Kadri aging, he's still a great depth addition to the already-stacked Colorado squad that can make noise in the playoffs.
The expectation is he'll slot in as 3C and hound opposing offense players while helping out on offense. This was an easy call for the franchise and it'll make fans happy. And yes, they gave up some serious picks for Kadri, but it's worth it if they're lifting the Cup soon enough. GRADE: A-
The Flames have spent the deadline and the year trading away vets, so this was the right call, no matter the return.
And the return? It's pretty darn good for Kadri. Two big picks and Olofsson is an expiring deal. That'll work just fine. GRADE: B+
