If the boys’ basketball season has taught us one thing so far, it’s that any team in the 12th Region can win on any given night.

Danville Christian was thought to be the best team heading into the season, but fell to Somerset, won in an overtime slugfest against Southwestern, and routed Pulaski County. All the local teams have double digit wins, but they also all have at least five losses on the season.

Somerset sits at 12-5 for the season and are just coming off an appearance in the All “A” State Tournament where they fell to Walton-Verona in the first round 47-45. They have a quality win over Danville Christian 70-64 in the regional All “A” tournament, and have also amassed two wins over Somerset Christian and an overtime win over Powell County. They are 4-1 in the 47th District and still have games remaining against Pulaski, Boyle County, Wayne County, Clinton County and Southwestern. Three players average over 10 points a game for this crew, but senior Aedyn Absher has shined brightly so far, leading the team in both points (21 per game) and rebounds (6.2 per game) while shooting nearly 37% from three.

Pulaski is 13-7 for the season and have had some fantastic wins this season, taking down West Jessamine, Somerset, South Oldham and Adair County, while also defeating Somerset Christian in the first-ever meeting between the two programs. The Maroons still have one more game to come against the Jumpers, but are currently a perfect 5-0 in 47th District play, with games also to come against LaRue County, Wayne County, Southwestern and Lincoln County. Pulaski is doing all this without a traditional big man, instead focusing on their stellar guard play. Every player in their starting lineup averages at least eight points per game, led by senior Carson Fraley’s 12.7 points per game. Tanner Absher (48.1%) and Blake Fraley (45.3%) are also sharpshooters behind the arch.

Southwestern is 11-7 for the season and are currently 3-1 in 48th District play, with big wins over Somerset Christian, Boyle County and South Laurel so far. They took the defending 12th Region champs in Danville Christian to the limit as well before falling 83-77 in overtime. There are still quality wins to be had as well, as they will still take on Somerset Christian again, Wayne County, Adair County, Pulaski and Somerset twice. Senior Zach Hutchinson leads the team with 17.5 points per game, but the Warriors also have fellow senior Jarrett Simpson who averages a near double-double with 14.8 points and 8.3 rebounds per game.

Somerset Christian sits at 10-8 and came up just short of a 12th Region All “A” crown in a championship loss to Somerset. Once again the Cougars took home the KCAC State Championship this season. They have some remaining quality games against Southwestern, Wayne County, Clinton County and Greenwood. Four out of their five starters average at least 12 points per game, with Jack Baker leading the team with 18.7 points per game while also hitting 77 three-pointers on a 44.5% clip.
