Former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick will have to wait another year to receive his honor in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. This year, voters did not select Belichick for induction, leaving one of his former players, Julian Edelman disappointed.
Edelman wrote Tuesday on X, “SMH,” which means “shaking my head” to the news that Belichick isn’t a first-ballot Hall of Famer.
Belichick won six Super Bowls as the head coach of the Patriots and two more as an assistant with the New York Giants. Edelman had an impressive career, playing 11 seasons with New England from 2009 to 2020, during which he won three Super Bowls.
The Patriots selected Edelman in the seventh round of the 2009 draft after he played at Kent State. While everyone knows Edelman as a fantastic wide receiver, he actually played quarterback during his time with the Golden Flashes.
Belichick was among the people in the Patriots’ organization who believed Edelman could thrive in another position. If it weren’t for Belichick’s support, there’s a chance Edelman might never have had an NFL career at all.
One day, Belichick will likely have his moment in the Hall of Fame. However, for some reason, he wasn’t selected as a Hall of Famer on his first try.
