The Kansas City Chiefsearned a key win over the Detroit Lions on "Sunday Night Football" in Week 6 despite being without the services of their starting left tackle Josh Simmons.
Simmons – a 2025 first-round pick out of Ohio State – was a late scratch after he was downgraded to "questionable" hours before the game Sunday. The Chiefs listed the 22-year-old's problem as "Not Injury Related – Personal" on their availability report, and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport later reported Simmons was "dealing with a family matter back home in California."
The Chiefs have not provided any additional updates on Simmons' status since then. He was not at the team's practices on Wednesday or Thursday, leaving his status murky for the forseeable future.
Here's everything we know thus far about Simmons' absence and whether there is any timetable for him to return to the field.
Andy Reid explained he did not have an update on Simmons' status in the opening statement of his Wednesday news conference.
"As far as Josh Simmons’ situation goes, I’m not going to comment on it today," Reid told reporters. "[General manager Brett] Veach is handling everything there. And we’ll leave it at that."
Reid was later asked whether he had any time table for Simmons' return. He simply shook his head no.
Meanwhile, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes acknowledged he has been in communication with Simmons but also declined to provide any additional information.
"I’ll keep conversations kind of between us," Mahomes said. "But I’m always praying for him. I’m praying for all my teammates, so I’m always praying for him. I’ll just keep everything else kind of private to us."
The Chiefs still have yet to give a concrete update on Simmons, but ESPN's Nate Taylor provided more information about the situation during an appearance on 96.5 The Fan on Thursday.
"I do believe it's a family matter," Taylor said of Simmons' absence.
Taylor acknowledged he didn't have full details of what was going on with the rookie offensive tackle. However, he provided more details about Simmons' late addition to the injury report in Week 5, a game for which he was listed as questionable due to an illness.
"I was sort of told yesterday, that his blip on the injury report hours before kickoff in the stadium in Jacksonville is related to what he's dealing with now," Taylor said.
Taylor did not specify whether that meant Simmons was dealing with some sort of illness or whether the Chiefs had simply listed him with a malady on their injury report instead of the "personal" designation while he deals with the family matter.
Either way, Taylor said things had been "really difficult" for Simmons.
"I can't imagine what he's going through, based on what I've heard," Taylor said. "But hopefully we'll know more in the coming days."
