Josh Hokit has been subject to intense criticism since the UFC fighter made a disparaging comment about Michelle Obama after his victory during a UFC event at the White House June 14.
But he said he has no regrets.
“You’ll never hear me backtrack from what I say,’’ Hokit said during an appearance on ‘’The Ariel Helwani Show.’’
After Hokit won his fight at UFC Freedom 250, during an interview in the Octagon, Hokit said, “Michelle Obama is a man! Am I right, America?’’
Hokit, 28, elaborated when Helwani asked what came to mind in that moment and why he made the remark.
“I thought it was a perfect opportunity to show the world how great this country is with the freedom of speech,’’ Hokit said. “You go somewhere and you say something like that and you die. And I'm not suicidal, by the way. I'm in good spirits. I'm a little under the weather right now, but other than that, I'm good.
“And so in other parts of the world, you say something like that and you're not here to speak to Ariel Helwani. Yeah, I don't know. There's a few answers to that and there's a certain side that pokes at another side and there's no outrage there. And so I thought it was a perfect time to take a jab.’’
Initially during the interview with Helwani, Hokit said comment about the former First Lady was a compliment.
“She knows how to work hard like a man when the times get tough,’’ he said.
Hokit improved his record to 10-0 when he knocked out Derrick Lewis during their heavyweight bout on the South Lawn of the White House.
