Josh Hart is the epitome of a winning basketball player. Whether his shot's falling or not, and it certainly wasn't in Game 1 of the NBA Finals, he tends to make the exact right play at the exact right time.
We saw that countless times last night, with Hart tallying 15 rebounds, six assists, four steals and a block. His energy proved to be an edge for New York, which closed the game on a 11-0 run to spoil the San Antonio Spurs' home-court advantage.
Hart channeled a pair of NBA legends in the process. The 31-year-old led all players in rebounds and assists in his first career NBA Finals game, something only two players in the shot-clock era have accomplished, per OptaStats: Shaquille O'Neal (1995) and Larry Bird (1981). Not bad on a night in which Hart went 1 of 5 from the field for three points.
Brunson was the Knicks' hero in Game 1, scoring 30 points including a crucial go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:50 to go. He lauded Hart's ability to make an impact without the ball in his hands after the game.
"That's just who he is," Brunson said. "He's always been that way. He just has a knack for doing things like that in crucial times, as well, so it's a credit to who he is as a player."
It's big praise and well-deserved.
