ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - On Monday night, Jose Caballero's two big home runs traveled a combined, estimated 793 feet.
Also, Caballero's two combined bat tosses went about 60-something feet. And then, Caballero took his sweet time around the bases.
"By the time he got back to the dugout, the next at-bat was already one or two pitches in,'' Ben Rice said after the Yankees' essential 5-1 win against the Rays.
Tonight, Caballero is back at shortstop with Anthony Volpe on the bench for a second straight night, this time against a lefty starter.
Entering this second game of a four-game set against the Rays - leading the Yanks by three games in the AL East - the meet-the-moment aspect of this series isn't lost on Rice and company.
"Given the standings and where we’re at right now (having still lost nine of their last 11 games), this is definitely one you circle on the calendar,'' Rice said of this series at Tropicana Field.
On Tuesday night, it's Will Warren (7-3, 3.73) starting for the Yanks against lefty Ian Seymour (5-1, 4.02), another converted Rays reliever, who has allowed just one earned run over his last two starts (12.2 innings).
