JOPLIN, MO. — Nearing the end of the organization’s inaugural season, the Joplin Jailbirds welcomed in over 90 youth athletes for a baseball camp at Joe Becker Stadium on Wednesday.

The camp was facilitated by the Jailbirds coaching staff alongside the players, focusing on teaching fundamentals of the game through a variety of drills and station work.

Camp participants ranged from ages 5-12, and those that took part in the camp will receive a ticket to the Jailbirds’ home game on July 23 where they will be recognized on the field during the national anthem.

While this was an opportunity for the youth athletes to learn from some of the top baseball talent in the area, it also provided a chance for the Jailbirds players to reset the focus following a regular season series finale against the Chillicothe Mudcats.

“They’re already pretty close, but it’ll help them on the field a little bit. Just like to know each other, learn about themselves, about how to teach the younger guys. It’s always important,” assistant coach Nate Mieskowski said. “We’ve got a big week coming up and it’s going to be important to get those wins coming up here for the playoffs.”

Missouri Southern athlete and Jailbirds pitcher Marcus Young added that the summer season has been a great experience, and events like Wednesday’s camp bring out the joy in baseball.

“We’re having a fun time. We don’t want to go home just yet. We’re enjoying it,” Young said. “This is some of the best times about baseball is just being able to be out there with guys that you just met a couple months ago, and just, let’s roll. It’s just playing baseball. That’s the best part about it at all.”

The MINK League playoffs begin July 27. Joplin currently holds the No. 4 seed based on league standings, though the Jailbirds have the potential to host a playoff game depending on the results of the final regular season series.
