On a scorching summer day in late July, Joplin played host to the Carroll (Iowa) Merchants to finish a recently postponed game and then play a regularly scheduled game Tuesday at Joe Becker Stadium.

The postponed contest was being resumed from June 11, when lightning cut things short in the top of the third inning in Joplin. The Jailbirds held a 3-0 lead to start things Tuesday.

They led 5-3 entering the home half of the seventh, and that’s when they pulled away. Joplin added three runs in both the seventh and the eighth to go on and claim an 11-3 victory.

In the nightcap, Joplin fell behind 1-0 in the fourth inning after a solo home run by Carroll’s Braylen Nystrom.

In the home half, Blake Jones tied things up for the Jailbirds. Shadrach Salazar added a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning, and Jordan Tucker made it 3-1 with an RBI single.

Joplin starter Cross Dowd held Carroll scoreless in the top of the fifth, and the bullpen kept the trend going as the team earned its second win of the day, 3-1.

Rhyn Chambers and Marcus Young each pitched a scoreless frame in relief. Chambers struck out three, Young two. Dowd allowed four hits, one walk and struck out seven Merchants on his way to earning the win. Chambers picked up a hold and Young got the save.

Both teams tallied four hits. Joplin drew six walks to Carroll’s one free pass.

Joplin (21-13, 20-13 MINK) gets ready for a three-game series against the Chillicothe Mudcats (12-21, 12-20 MINK) that begins at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. This series concludes the regular season.

The Jailbirds will look to pass St. Joseph (23-14, 20-13 MINK) for third place in the standings. The Mustangs play three more conference games as well. They face the league’s top team, the Clarinda A’s, at home Friday. Then St. Joe has a doubleheader Saturday against the North Missouri Nattys with a postponed game to start. That game saw the Mustangs trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the first back on June 13.
