PITTSBURG, Kan. — Joplin’s boys basketball team could not overcome a 32-point performance from Webster Groves’ Scottie Adkinson and fell 76-61 to the Statesmen in their opening game of the Bill Hanson Memorial Tournament on Thursday at Pittsburg High School.

Adkinson, who has committed to play for the University of Missouri, got the defending Class 5 champs on the board with a baseline drive, followed by a steal and score.

Joplin’s Brecken Green made it a 4-2 game when he blocked a Webster Groves shot and traveled the length of the floor for the score.

Webster Groves (11-5) then went on a 7-0 run sparked by a Adkinson dunk and capped off by a Jayden Woods drive to the rim that gave the Statesmen an 11-2 lead at the 4:18 mark.

A Trenton McCadney trey pulled the Eagles to within 6 points with 4:04 left, but Webster Groves outscored the Eagles 6-2 in the last two minutes to take a 17-7 lead going into the second period.

A short jumper from Green made it a 17-9 game, but the Statesmen put together an 18-6 run to take a 33-15 lead with 3:20 left in the half.

The Eagles did not go quietly as they orchestrated a 10-0 run that began with a Green drive to the basket and culminated with a TJ Willis trey from the right side that pulled the Eagles within 8 points at 33-25 with about a minute left in the half.

After Webster Groves’ Peter Oliver hit a 3-pointer from the right side, Fred Taylor popped a trey in for the Eagles to make it a 36-28 game going into the break.

The Eagles trimmed the lead to 5 points to open the second half, courtesy of a Tucker Martin trey from the left side.

The teams traded buckets until Adkinson ignited a 20-7 run for the Statesmen.

The Eagles trailed by as many as 23 midway through the final frame before falling 76-61.

“It was a good, competitive game,” Joplin head coach Nick Pfeifer said. “I liked the way we competed. I would have liked to have started a little bit better. We weren’t as sharp as we needed to be, and we weren’t as aggressive. When we got into a little bit more of an aggressive mode in the second and fourth quarters, we were effective on both ends. Unfortunately, we were playing from behind and didn’t get it done.”

Green led the Eagles with 14 points. Taylor followed with 14, and Martin and Willis had 9 each.

Because of weather concerns, there will be no Saturday games, but there was to be an additional game for all teams Friday.

Joplin (8-7) was scheduled to battle Branson at 5 p.m. Friday. Branson logged a 65-41 win over Washburn Rural (Topeka, Kansas) on Thursday. Results of the Joplin game Friday evening were not available at deadline.
