NEVADA, Mo. — The last time they met, on Dec. 13, Joplin's boys basketball team logged a 24-point win over the Nevada Tigers. That was not the case Friday afternoon as the Tigers logged a 66-51 win over Joplin in an all-school game in front of the Nevada High School student body.
The Tigers (11-3) made an early statement with an alley-oop from Jett Snyder to Sean Simmons for a dunk that brought Nevada students to their feet.
The Tigers gave students more to cheer about in the first quarter, as they jumped to a 6-0 lead off a pair of free throws from Mason Majors and an Alex Ast score in the paint at the 5:20 mark.
T.J. Willis got the Eagles on the board with a trey from the top of the key with 4:43 remaining, but the Tigers responded with a 3-pointer from Majors and a transition bucket from Ast that gave Nevada an 11-3 lead.
Fred Taylor stopped the bleeding for the Eagles with a trey at the three-minute mark, but the Tigers scored the last 7 points of the quarter to take an 18-6 lead going into the second stanza.
Up 20-8, the Tigers put together an 8-0 run sparked by a pair of Majors drives through the lane that put the home team up by 20 points.
A Willis deep 3-pointer at the 3:28 mark and a pair of Tucker Martin free throws narrowed the Tigers lead to 28-13 with 2:37 left.
The Tigers enjoyed their biggest lead of the half at 36-15, courtesy of a Simmons score in the paint with 1:09 left in the half.
A Taylor trey and a pair of Brecken Green free throws made it a 36-20 game going at the half.
Nevada maintained a 15- to 17-point edge throughout the third quarter and carried a 49-32 advantage into the final period.
Down 53-39, Joplin’s David Bhend hit a 3-pointer with 5:38 left in the game that fueled a 10-0 Eagle run that cut the Tigers lead to single digits for the first time since the first period.
Joplin trailed by just 4 points with 3:26 left, but Nevada’s Ast increased the lead to 6 points at 55-49 with three minutes left in the game. The Tigers were 8 for 8 from the line during the next 2:19 and increased their lead to 65-49 with 41 seconds left.
“We have played those dudes for the last couple of years, and they were physical,” Joplin head coach Nick Pfeifer said. "They were physical and played a lot better than we did. I didn’t feel like we were prepared from the start. When you dig yourself that kind of a hole, it’s hard to expect to come back against a good team, and we obviously fell short.”
Taylor led the Eagles with 14 points. Martin netted 9, and Willis finished with 8.
Majors paced the Tigers with 19. Ast had 17, and Simmons finished with 16.
The Eagles (8-6) return to action Thursday against Webster Groves at the Bill Hanson Memorial tournament in Pittsburg, Kansas.
