With tip-off between top overall seed Duke and No. 16 seed Siena less than 24 hours away, Blue Devils’ head coach Jon Scheyer gave the latest update on the status of starting center Patrick Ngongba.
“He's been progressing as we've gotten closer to tomorrow,” Scheyer said. “I think it's very unlikely that he plays tomorrow. We're taking it day by day. He's itching to play, but we're not quite there for tomorrow just yet.”
Ngongba has been dealing with a foot injury and hasn’t played since Duke’s win at NC State on Feb. 2, four games ago. Along with the injury to starting guard Caleb Foster, his absence gives the Blue Devils a problem with depth, although that didn’t rear its ugly head in the ACC Tournament as Duke won its second straight title.
As for when Ngongba returns, Scheyer is hopeful it is soon, but, as he says, it’s not something you can put a precise timeline on.
“It's not just anything where you can say two weeks, and you're back, 12 days and you're back,” the Duke head coach said. “You have to take it step by step with what he's doing. Everything is going in a good direction, but I think the comfort that we want him to feel is not quite there. So that's something we can only know day to day.
“I can tell you that in a perfect world, I think he'd be playing tomorrow. But it's nothing other than he's not quite ready to go. We'll do everything we can to get ready for Saturday and go from there.”
