Jon Rahm is once again in contention at a LIV Golf event as he seeks his first win on the circuit in nearly 18 months.

Rahm followed up his blistering second-round 62 with a 5-under 65 in the third round at Hong Kong Golf Club to finish the day 17 under, in a tie for the lead with Thomas Detry and Harold Varner III with one round remaining. Rahm finished solo second in each of the first two LIV Golf events in 2026. Going back to the beginning of the 2025 LIV season, the Spanish superstar has six runner-up finishes in 15 starts. But a win eludes him.

“You have to keep putting yourself in contention and giving yourself chances,” Rahm said. “As long as I'm doing that, I'm playing good golf, take advantage of the opportunities I get, but it'll come. As I'm playing solid golf, I'm hoping tomorrow I have a good Sunday and get it done.”

Rahm, 31, has made headlines for several reasons in recent weeks. His ongoing saga with the DP World Tour has been heavily scrutinized — even earning a lengthy comment from Rory McIlroy — while his chartering of a flight to Hong Kong for eight LIV Golf members stranded in the Middle East earned him praise.

“The way I see it is it's simply my duty,” Rahm said in regards to the charter flight. “I was raised with certain values, that if you have the ability and capability of helping somebody, especially in a scenario like that where my main focus essentially was getting them out of there, not necessarily playing a tournament.

“With the ever-changing environment, it looked kind of dark for a second. At one point, if they went through a different extraction plan, they were going to go to Europe. I was trying to help people in Spain to get them set up to practice in Spain. It looked like coming here was going to be hard. But yeah, here they are. Never thought they would be able to come. It's amazing that so many of them are all safe and that's the most important thing.”

One of those players who boarded the private charter arranged by Rahm was Detry, who put a whirlwind week behind him and has managed to play some really good golf over three days at Hong Kong Golf Club. Detry, who's in his first season with LIV Golf after leaving the PGA Tour, carded rounds of 64-63-66 to grab a share of the lead entering the final round.

"Well, if it wasn't for [Rahm], I don't think I'd be here,” Detry said. “It's a little bit funny that way. But listen, we're both competitors, and he's done it for his teammates. He's done it for the league. It's amazing what he did, and he's a good friend of mine, as well. We've played a lot of golf as juniors and on the PGA Tour and everywhere together and out here now. I think we're just going to have a nice competitive fun round tomorrow, and we'll see who prevails.”

And then there's Varner, who is seeking his first LIV Golf victory in nearly three years, the last coming at LIV Golf DC in May 2023. The 31-year-old Ohio native played himself into Sunday's final group by shooting bogey-free 63 in the third round. Rahm, Detry and Varner tee off at 11:57 a.m. local time Sunday in Hong Kong, or 10:57 p.m. ET Saturday.

Bryson DeChambeau sits in a six-way tie for 23rd at 8 under after three rounds at LIV Golf Hong Kong, while Tyrell Hatton is one shot behind him. Anthony Kim, who has been arguably the biggest storyline of the LIV Golf season thus far, is T-38 at 5 under.
