Red Sox owner John Henry broke his X silence after nearly five years with a one-word response to The Boston Globe’s Dan Shaughnessy.
Shaughnessy criticized NESN as “cheap” and “greedy” and said Red Sox fans deserve better when it came to listening to the local broadcasts during spring training games.
The Boston Globe columnist corrected himself, noting he learned that the local broadcast isn’t always available to viewers across MLB.
“In this instance, NESN is being neither greedy nor cheap,” Shaughnessy wrote. “My bad.”
Henry, whose Fenway Sports Group owns 80% of NESN, replied with one word: “Historic.”
Henry also owns The Boston Globe.
So, could Henry become a regular on the social media app that he’s been quiet on for nearly five years?
“I hope not, for his sake,” Red Sox president and CEO Sam Kennedy said during his yearly Opening Day appearance on the “Fenway Rundown” podcast. “It’s a rough and tumble, tough, toxic place to be. But, yeah, I saw that and I obviously had to smile.”
Henry notoriously has not taken public questions from the Red Sox media in over six years. He did do an interview with The Financial Times in 2024, and a quick interview with WEEI in 2021, but has been quiet with local media since 2020. It’s drawn vast criticism from fans and media for him being absent — especially during Boston’s down years in which it missed the postseason for three straight years, fired Chaim Bloom and failed to address needs at several trade deadlines.
Despite the public absence, Kennedy assured that Henry is an active owner.
“Look, it’s funny. We all sort of laugh internally. John is so active, so involved. We talk every day, multiple times a day. He and (Craig Breslow) talk, text WhatsApp multiple times a day,” Kennedy said. “John and (his wife) Linda relatively recently did a fireside chat with all of our employees at a sort of kind of a town hall setting. And so very accessible and very much leading our organization. The choice to not engage day to day with members of the media is a choice that has served John well because it’s just something that he leaves to others.
“But when he wants to do it, when he wants to engage, he will,” he continued. “And you saw that (Sunday) night and I had to laugh at our friend Dan’s expense.”
