Trevor Story finally has a potential target for the next major step in his recovery.

The Boston Red Sox shortstop told reporters that beginning a minor league rehab assignment “sometime in August is in play,” according to Tim Healey of The Boston Globe. Story remains on the 60-day injured list after undergoing surgery to repair a sports hernia. Story’s update does not guarantee that his return to Boston’s lineup is imminent. He would still need to begin baseball activities, receive medical clearance and complete a rehab assignment without experiencing a setback.

However, the possibility of Story playing in minor league games this month represents encouraging news for a Red Sox team attempting to remain in the playoff race.

Trevor Story Working Back From Sports Hernia Surgery​

Story has not appeared in a game since May 14, when Boston suffered a 3-1 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. The 33-year-old underwent sports hernia surgery after landing on the injured list. His move to the 60-day IL ensured that the Red Sox would be without their veteran shortstop for an extended portion of the season.

Story struggled offensively before the injury. He hit .206 with three home runs, 19 RBIs and a .547 OPS. He also struck out 40 times in 102 at-bats against American League opponents.

His numbers at Fenway Park were particularly disappointing. Story batted .190 with one home run, eight RBIs and a .224 on-base percentage across 21 home games. Those results were not what Boston expected from one of its most experienced players. Still, a healthy Story could provide value during the final weeks of the regular season, particularly with his defense and power potential.

The two-time All-Star has recorded 207 home runs, 655 RBIs and 254 doubles during his major league career. He has also dealt with several injuries since signing a six-year contract with Boston before the 2022 season.

Red Sox Could Gain Late-Season Reinforcement​

Boston entered Wednesday with a 61-51 record as it prepared to host the Chicago White Sox at Fenway Park. The Red Sox have remained in postseason contention without Story, but his eventual return could give the club another experienced option in the infield. Boston has used players such as Nick Sogard and Andruw Monasterio while adjusting to Story’s absence.

A rehab assignment would allow Story to test his body in game conditions while working to regain his timing at the plate. The length of that assignment would likely depend on his health and performance. Because Story has been sidelined for nearly three months, Boston probably will not rush the process simply to bring him back a few days earlier. The Red Sox need to determine whether he can handle the physical demands of playing shortstop on a regular basis.

There is also no guarantee Story immediately reclaims an everyday role. His early-season production was poor, and Boston must prioritize the lineup that gives the team its best opportunity to win during a potential playoff push. Nevertheless, Story’s experience could become valuable if he returns healthy. He has played in 47 postseason games and was part of four playoff teams during his six seasons with the Colorado Rockies.

Story still has several steps to complete before returning to Fenway Park. His latest update at least creates the possibility that Boston could regain its veteran shortstop before the regular season reaches its decisive stretch.
