Jemele Hill Feels Sophie Cunningham Was Forced to Blame Media after Right Wing “Vilified” Caitlin Clark

Jemele Hill believes the treatment Caitlin Clark received by the “right wing” played a role in Sophie Cunningham’s decision to call out the media on Wednesday. Amid criticism over her remarks on excluding trans athletes from women’s sports, Cunningham said the media had taken the attention away from basketball this past week.

“The WNBA media… all we ever do is cover everything except basketball. What are we doing?” Cunningham told WISH-TV News.

Hill believes Cunningham was pushed to divert attention after the right wing “vilified” Clark for not taking a stance regarding something she wasn’t directly involved in.

“I believe the reason Sophie Cunningham is now blaming the media and asking to keep it about basketball after her comments on trans athletes is because somebody told her to dial it back,” Hill wrote on Threads. “Caitlin Clark didn’t have anything to do with what she said and now the right is vilifying CC for not supporting Sophie. Can’t do that to the franchise player. Also the WNBA got put in a bad spot for no reason. That’s the thing about when you order some attention, can’t control how it gets delivered.”

On Sunday, Clark took the podium for the first time since Cunningham’s remarks in an interview with ESPN. Clark said it was up to the leagues and governing bodies to collaborate with players and find a solution, and that her focus was limited to playing and discussing the sport.

While many, like Hill, respected her decision not to dip her toes into the political sphere, others like Megyn Kelly called her out.

Analyst supports Sophie Cunningham’s take on the media​

WNBA analyst Robin Lundberg showed support for Sophie Cunningham after the Fever guard called out the media. Lundberg listed the order of the “operations” that saw Cunningham suggest it was the media’s fault for covering her comments more than basketball.

“Order of operations: —Sophie made comment in article —Sophie asked to clarify when no clarification was needed —Media member hijacked presser based on like 15 people outside —Sophie leaned into it all —Pundits pushed issue endlessly —Sophie trying to tamper it down.”

Cunningham’s comments sparked protests for and against trans athletes. Several media members asked questions to other Fever personnel who had no involvement. Cunningham doubled down on it on Jul. 22, adding more fuel to the fire.

And so, in her second address to reporters since her remarks went public, Sophie Cunningham wasted no time in calling on the media to end coverage around her remarks and focus on basketball.
