Sophie Cunningham has been dividing opinion over her views, and her recent take on the participation of transgender athletes in women’s sports has drawn particular attention. Now, Cunningham has received some support from a Minnesota Senate candidate amid the recent backlash.
Michele Tafoya, a US Senate candidate from Minnesota who is also a four-time Emmy award-winning sports journalist, lent her support to the WNBA star.
“When the WNBA began, it celebrated women. Today, players like Sophie Cunningham are attacked for defending fairness and standing up for women and girls. I am proud to stand with @JenniferSey in speaking out for women’s sports. We won’t stop fighting,” she wrote as her caption on X alongside a video of her discussing the issue.
Cheryl Reeve’s Controversial Remarks on Fans Supporting Sophie Cunningham’s Take
Among the critics of Sophie Cunningham’s stance on transgender athletes in women’s sports was Minnesota Lynx coach, Cheryl Reeve.
“These young girls sitting at games with anti-trans signs, do they understand actually what their real problems are? And how they’re being marginalized? We’re still not in the space where we have equality,” she told reporters on Saturday.
The comment drew widespread criticism, while women like Michele Tafoya offered support to Cunningham and others who share the basketball player’s views.
