Tya Devericks did it all for No. 1 Sioux Falls Jefferson, tossing a shutout over all seven innings and hitting a tiebreaking two-run home run in the third to help the Cavaliers beat No. 9 Sioux Falls Lincoln in the Class AA state quarterfinals.
Jefferson will play the winner of No. 4 Brandon Valley and No. 5 Sioux Falls Roosevelt at 2 p.m. Friday, June 5.
The star junior held Lincoln to just two hits in the game and added in seven strikeouts. She didn't get a ton of help from her offense, but all she really needed was her big blow.
"First game of the state tournament, got to get some of the jitters out," Devericks said. "Our team coming in, we were a little weak on the bats. My defense is great behind me, so I was trying to find a way we could step up offensively. Hitting that ball over the fence was a good start."
Locked in a scoreless tie with Macy Bryant on second base, Devericks lifted a two-strike, two-out two-run homer over the right-field fence to give the Cavaliers the lead.
Jefferson head coach Ed Whiting has been amazed by Devericks' consistency and ability over the last few years, but Thursday was a moment for her to shine alone in a big spot.
"That's what she's been doing for three years and she's got many years ahead of her," Whiting said. "She's been voted team captain as a sophomore and junior, hardest worker in the weight room, just always locked in and engaged. Every day is a gameday. That's what you get all the time out of her."
Jefferson tacked on an insurance run in the sixth, with Bella Sorum driving in Brooklyn Herrera with a flare to right-center.
Lincoln took Jefferson to the brink in their first matchup in late April, with the top seed coming out on top 9-7. It was much different this time around, but the Cavaliers were prepared for everything.
"Last game we knew this is a tough team," Devericks said. "They have some great hitters. We need to be strong and have a plan and know that anything can happen."
Brooklyn Brown threw a complete game for Lincoln and stifled a top offense, allowing three runs on six hits and four walks with three strikeouts.
