The No. 3 Sioux Falls Jefferson and No. 6 Pierre baseball teams had to deal with some whipping rain for the first four to five innings of their South Dakota High School Baseball Association (SDHSBA) Class A state quarterfinal game, but the Cavaliers jumped on the Governors' pitchers early to edge out a 5-3 win at Ronken Field.

Jefferson will face either No. 2 Brandon Valley or No. 7 O'Gorman in the semifinals at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, May 23. Jefferson lost to Brandon Valley in last year's state championship game.

The Cavaliers scored two runs in the first, two in the second and another in the third to take a 5-0 lead.

Cason Mediger and Brody Jacobson each smoked a double to go up 1-0 before an out was recorded in the bottom of the first. Jacobson then scored on a groundout by Easton Riley.

"I'm not a coach who's going to say, 'Watch pitches,'" Jefferson head coach Matt Kuenzi said. "If the first pitch is there, go ahead and attack. That's what Cason did right away."

Jacobson drove in another two runs in the second on an RBI single, plating Noah Grabow and Mediger. Grabow drove in a run himself in the third, plating Noah Kuenzi.

"Just staying loose in the box and doing what I do," Jacobson said. "Just helping my team out in that aspect right there."

Everett Salonen battled some command issues with the wet ball, but still managed to navigate through five innings. He gave up two hits, walked five and hit a batter, striking out six.

Salonen allowed three unearned runs in the top of the fourth. With the bases loaded and two outs, Carter Schiefelbein struck out and the ball was dropped by Jackson Dunn. Dunn then threw the ball into right field and all three Pierre runners came around to score.

"Game 1 was a big game we had to get," Matt Kuenzi said. "Realistically, he did everything we asked. We had one mistake cost us three runs. Everett executed his pitches, he did real well, he finished his position."

Matnel Jensen reliever Salonen, going two scoreless innings with two hits and two walks allowed to get the save.

Brennan McCullough tossed the remaining five innings after Pierre starter Carter Templeton was chased in the second inning. He held Jefferson to two runs, but getting to Templeton early was always the goal.

"The bats came out hot, the boys came out with energy and it was great just to get that first win out of the way," Jacobson said.

Jacobson finished 2-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and a run scored. Grabow had two hits, an RBI and a run, Mediger singled, walked and scored twice. Noah Kuenzi singled, walked and scored once. Riley knocked in a run, Dunn singled and walked and Maddox Zens drew a walk.
