West Valley head football coach Jason Weston has resigned from his role with the team, Weston told the Record Searchlight on Wednesday, Jan. 14.

“When I took over … I always said that I wanted to leave the program better than I found it,” Weston said. “Based on my career objectives and what I think is a good thing for me and my personal decisions, I think this is a good time to do so.”

Weston took over the head coaching duties from Lenny Ehn in 2022 and led the Eagles to a 21-23 overall record in his four seasons at the helm. Weston also led the Eagles to a league title in his first season and three playoff appearances during the 2022, 2023 and 2025 seasons.

“I’m eternally grateful for the opportunity that I was given because it was my shot; my first real shot at being a head coach,” Weston said. “When I think about my last four years, (there are) so many good memories. They taught me everything about personal relationships and how to deal with a community and how not to deal with a community, just valuable lessons at a young age that I’m going to take into whatever I do next.”

Most recently, Weston and the Eagles finished with a 7-3 regular season record in 2025 before losing to Orland in the first round of the Division III Northern Section playoffs. The Eagles finished with a 3-7 record the year prior.

West Valley also made a run to the NSCIF semifinals in 2022.

While he won’t be calling plays for the Eagles next season, what Weston saw out of the current group of athletes inspires hope for the future.

“I think the program is largely in a good spot to be successful next year, and I think that someone can come in and do well moving forward,” Weston said. “It’s got a great roster, we have a talented pipeline with youth football and the person who takes over should be able to just take it, run, and make it whatever they feel is their own.”

Weston will remain in his role as a teacher at West Valley and is not involved in the decision-making process for the next head coach.

West Valley officials could not comment on potential candidates for the role as the selection process is still ongoing. According to athletic director Kol Zuppan, interviews will start as early as next week, and there is no fixed deadline for the decision.

Although he doesn’t currently have set plans to coach next season, Weston said he would like to continue his coaching career when the right opportunity arises.

“I thought that this was a good time to reevaluate what I want, as I’m still relatively young and have a lot of options in my coaching career,” Weston said.

A 31-year-old Weston took over as head coach during a tumultuous time for the program. Ehn served as West Valley's head coach for two seasons (2020-21) following the resignation of former head coach Greg Grandell.

In 2020, the Record Searchlight reported that Grandell resigned amid allegations that the West Valley program had a longstanding tradition of hazing and abuse under Grandell's tenure — allegations that were eventually brought to and settled in court.

The settlement was reached in September of 2022 — a month into Weston's first season as head coach.
