The Washington Nationals have officially clinched the series win to kick off the six-game homestand after taking down the Arizona Diamondbacks, 9-4, on Sunday afternoon.
CJ Abrams did more of what has become expected of the star shortstop after posting two home runs and three RBIs on a 2-for-4 day. Abrams was one of two players to record three hits in the win, but he was also one of two players who belted two home runs in Sunday’s win after James Wood recorded his first home runs since the All Star break.
Miles Mikolas lasted just four innings in the win, allowing three earned runs and four hits against just one strikeout, before the bullpen stepped in to do just enough as the Nationals’ lead grew.
Mikolas’ first run allowed came in the first frame after a double brought in the runner who reached base on a five-pitch at bat.
Washington answered back in the bottom of the second inning after Brady House, who was officially recalled following the Mead-to-Boston trade, opened with a leadoff double. Jacob Young’s RBI single tied the game, but it would be a brief lead before Mikolas gave up a solo shot in the third inning.
CJ Abrams would be the savior after his 390 foot home run needed a replay review for confirmation that the game was tied back up, this time at two, after blasting the 79 mph curve ball in the bottom of the third.
Mikolas would then give up a leadoff home run in his fourth and final inning before Riley Cornelio allowed a sacrifice fly in the fifth, but the four-run frame that ensued in the bottom of the inning would give the Nationals the lead for good.
Wood’s home run brought in Nasim Nunez after he drew a leadoff walk, tying the game at four, before Abrams’ second home run brought in Daylen Lile to make it 6-4.
House and Young then notched consecutive doubles to double Washington’s lead to 8-4, before Arizona’s throwing error allowed Keibert Ruiz to reach base and Young to cross the plate.
With Tom Cosgrove on the mound in the eighth, Arizona’s second out came on a sac fly before Wood’s second home run of the day pushed Washington’s lead back to five in a 10-5 contest.
Matt Krook came in to open the ninth, yet after walking the first three batters faced, Blake Butera turned to Clayton Beeter to save the Nationals in a jam.
The first out came courtesy of a fielder’s choice before a subsequent single then groundout cut Washington’s lead to three. But the threat would end there after a grounder cemented the series win.
