The snowballs may have been flying around in Harrisonburg, Virginia, but that didn’t stop the Dukes of James Madison from capturing their first Sun Belt Conference Championship with a dominant 31-14 win over Troy.
The first quarter was low on scoring as the defenses stood tall at Bridgeforth Stadiun, but a late JMU field goal gave the Dukes the 3-0 advantage after 15 minutes.
Quickly into the second quarter, Goose Crowder put Troy on the board with a touchdown run to make it 7-3 Trojans. However, the Dukes roared back with a 73-yard touchdown run from Wayne Knight to make it a 10-7 contest. JMU added to the advantage later in the quarter with another touchdown, but Troy got the last word of the first half with a Tae Meadows run to make it 17-14 at the break.
In the fourth quarter, Bob Chesney’s team was able to put it away with two touchdowns in less than a minute as Alonza Barnett had a 26-yard touchdown run before the defense got a scoop and score to seal the deal and being the SBC title and a likely spot in the College Football Playoff to the Dukes.
Barnett finished the night 10/25 for 93 yards and a touchdown while adding 85 yards rushing and a score. Wayne Knight carried the way with over 200 yards rushing.
JMU now sits at 12-1 while Troy falls to 8-5.
