If you were guessing that Bayern Munich attacking midfielder Jamal Musiala really needed that goal against Curaçao, you would be correct. The German national team star got a tremendous boost by scoring.
“The goal definitely felt really good. I don’t think I’ve ever been as happy since my injury as I was in that moment – it was certainly one of my best games since I came back. A lot of things worked out, I felt free and good on the pitch. I’ll take that feeling with me.” Musiala told Bild journalists Christian Falk and Julian Agardi (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
The feeling was amplified by the grueling recovery that Musiala is still in the midst of after his catastrophic leg injury suffered at the Club World Cup last summer. Musiala, of course, was caught in a media scrum last weekend between Jürgen Klopp and Thomas Müller vs. Lothar Matthäus on whether or not Musiala should sit out to
“I know that’s part of being a footballer. The road back involved a lot of hard work and patience: it was tough at times, but I’m convinced that even if it’s not always easy, you have to focus on the positive. Even if that’s sometimes difficult. I’ve definitely learned the most this year. Not just about football, I’ve also grown as a person. I now know that to come back from such a serious injury as the one I experienced, you need patience. The step you take afterward is all the bigger for it. That’s how I see it,” said Musiala. “Believe me, I don’t watch or read anything the pundits say. I can easily imagine what’s being said; after all, I’ve been in the football business for quite some time. But I consciously prefer to stay away from these things that are said or written about me. I focus solely on myself. For me, the most important thing is that my mind is always clear. Only then can I feel fresh on the pitch. Julian (Nagelsmann) tells me what I need to know to do my job on the pitch.”
Musiala’s approach is exactly what he needs at this point — to stay focused on the task at hand and to work to get better every day.
