All-SEC selection Jadan Baugh drew substantial interest from other schools after rushing for 1,170 scrimmage yards last season. Following Florida's 4-8 campaign, the rising junior had plenty of opportunities to explore the transfer portal.
Despite being part of a unit that took a step back in 2025, Baugh decided to return to Gainesville. He later revealed that his relationship with new head coach Jon Sumrall was a decisive factor.
According to Baugh, Sumrall's Christmas Eve home visit ultimately convinced the Doak Walker Award watch list honoree to believe in his vision for the program. He did seriously reconsider his future after Billy Napier's firing, but in the end, Sumrall's authenticity stood out to the Atlanta, Georgia, native and his family.
"The day after Jon Sumrall attended his father’s funeral, his entire family was at Jadan Baugh’s grandmother’s house in Atlanta. It was Christmas Eve, and the new Florida head coach needed the star running back to know how important he was to the program’s future," wrote On3 national reporter Pete Nakos.
"Several other Florida staffers were in attendance. The gesture spoke louder than any recruiting pitch Baugh could have expected. With multiple top programs working to get him to enter the transfer portal, Sumrall laid everything out, Nakos continued.
“It meant everything to me,” Baugh told On3. The star rusher went on to explain how much it meant for the coach to be present along with his family in a time of turmoil. To Baugh, the gesture was proof that UF's new lead man cared about his players beyond the gridiron.
In the NIL era, retaining key players has become just as important as signing high school prospects or adding transfers. Keeping Baugh in Gainesville may have been the biggest offseason victory for the staff. His return gives Florida a proven offensive leader as the Gators continue searching for a starting quarterback entering fall camp.
"The meeting ended with Baugh feeling confident he could play for Sumrall at Florida in 2026. But the running back still took his time to make a final decision, waiting until Jan. 6 to sign a contract to return for another season."
Baugh enters 2026 as one of the faces of Florida football, making his choice to stay one of the defining moments of Sumrall's first go for the Orange and Blue.
