Following the 2025 NFL draft, where the Jacksonville Jaguars made nine selections, let's make a way-too-early prediction of what their 53-man roster this season might look like coming out of training camp.
The difficulty here, beyond the fact that it is still April, is with a new coaching staff; those new offensive and defensive schemes could elevate different players, like incoming undrafted rookies, and we also don't know how some of the returning, non-established players will transition to the new systems.
In Year 1, under any new coaching staff, is when a lot of changes to the roster can happen, as they search for players who best suit what they are looking for, and previous draft statuses, and sometimes even playing time, can take a back seat.
So I say all of that to say I think there could be a lot of surprises come late August when the actual roster comes out. But for now, and not knowing how all of that will play out, I was more conservative in my projection--making room for the incoming draft picks while giving many of the returning players the benefit of the doubt. However, admittedly, it may not play out that way this summer.
Quarterback (2): Trevor Lawrence, Nick Mullens
Some teams choose to roster a third quarterback, and maybe the Jaguars go that route. But I'm of the mindset that this a roster spot that could be put to better use elsewhere. So we will keep two quarterbacks.
Running back (4): Travis Etienne, Tank Bigsby, Bhayshul Tuten, LeQuint Allen
Rostering four running backs is a lot and not something many teams do. But at this stage of the process, I'm not sure who could be let go if the Jaguars decide to keep only three.
Wide receiver (5): Gabe Davis, Dyami Brown, Brian Thomas Jr., Parker Washington, Travis Hunter
Maybe someone else on the roster outside of these five surprises us this summer, and the Jaguars keep six wide receivers. But for now, this is the clear-cut top five.
Tight end (3): Johnny Mundt, Hunter Long, Brenton Strange,
After going heavy at running back, I went light at tight end. Again, looking at the roster beyond these three, there are a lot of unknowns. Can someone emerge? Certainly. Do we know who that might be right now? I don't.
Offensive line (11): Walker Little, Ezra Cleveland, Robert Hainsey, Patrick Mekari, Anton Harrison, Chuma Edoga, Cole Van Lanen, Luke Fortner, Wyatt Milum, Jonah Monheim, Javon Foster
Some teams roster nine offensive linemen, some will keep 10, but it's not often we see 11. However, going back to our conversation to start all of this, we don't have enough info right now to say which of these players could be the odd man out. So we made the roster math work.
Defensive line (9): Josh Hines-Allen, Travon Walker, Myles Coles, Arik Armstead, Maason Smith, Davon Hamilton, Emmanuel Ogbah, Jordan Jefferson, Jalen McLeod
The Jaguars added Ogbah after the draft, and I know McLeod was listed as a linebacker, but he spent a lot of time as a pass rusher at Auburn. I do wonder now, with the addition of Ogbah, if we see Armstead move back to defensive tackle to give that unit a boost.
Linebacker (6): Devin Lloyd, Foyesade Oluokun, Chad Muma, Ventrell Miller, Yasir Abdullah, Jack Kiser
Six linebackers is a lot, but similarly to the offensive line, trying to decipher who might be the odd man out here in April isn't easy. So this is a position where, for now, we will go heavy and it's one where key special teams contributors will come from.
Cornerback (5): Tyson Campbell, Jourdan Lewis, Jarrian Jones, Montaric Brown, De'Antre Prince,
Really, the Jaguars have six cornerbacks on the roster, with Travis Hunter. Brown played a major role last season, and Prince is a 2024 draft pick.
Safety (5): Eric Murray, Darnell Savage, Antonio Johnson, Caleb Ransaw, Rayuan Lane
I did leave Andrew Wingard off at this position. He did fill in defensively late last season and contributed on teams, but with two additions to this unit in the draft, I had to make room for Ransaw and Lane.
Special teams (3): Logan Cooke, Ross Matiscik, Cam Little
No surprises here.
