Expectations have already been set for several Jackson State football players in 2026.
The SWAC announced its preseason awards on July 8, and defensive back Kam Sallis was picked as the conference's Defensive Player of the Year. Five other Tigers also made the All-SWAC teams.
The awards were voted on by the conference's head coaches and sports information directors.
Sallis is the Tigers' most prominent returning defensive player. Last season, as a starting safety, he totaled 53 tackles with two interceptions and two forced fumbles. He made the All-SWAC second team.
Sallis is one of three players to make the preseason All-SWAC first team and the only defensive player. The others are offensive lineman Quaveon Davis and wide receiver Nate Rembert.
Davis started every game at right tackle, earning second-team All-SWAC honors. Rembert also made the second team after leading JSU with 750 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.
Quarterback Jared Lockhart, linebacker Carmello Jones and defensive back KJ Chisholm all made the preseason All-SWAC second team.
Lockhart is preparing for his first year as JSU's full-time starter. He played in seven games last season, starting five due to JaCobian Morgan being injured. Lockhart threw for 1,187 yards and eight touchdowns with three interceptions, and rushed for 189 yards and three touchdowns. He won SWAC Co-Freshman of the Year.
Jones is also expected to step into a starting role after primarily serving as a backup in 2025. Last season, he recorded 36 tackles and 4.5 tackles for loss in 11 games.
Chisholm started 11 games at cornerback last season as a sophomore. He had 34 tackles and five pass breakups.
JSU's six preseason All-SWAC players tied for the second-most with Bethune-Cookman and Alcorn State. Alabama State led all teams with nine selections.
