This week, Chiefs Wire's Ed Easton Jr. spoke with the President of the NFL Alumni Kansas City Chapter and Kansas City Chiefs legend J.C. Pearson.

In his interview with Easton Jr., Pearson discussed his role as an NFL Alumni ambassador for the 'GEAR UP Against Cancer'campaign's fight against lung cancer, in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Division of Cancer Prevention and Control. He also noted that the Chiefs' lack of hunger in 2025 affected their performance.

"The NFL alumni and the CDC have partnered for this 'GEAR UP Against Cancer' campaign," said Pearson, "In particular, lung cancer, which is the third leading cancer of all cancers, which is pretty surprising and really affects men of color, African American men."

This fight is important. Lung cancer takes too many lives, and early detection can save them. I’m teaming up with @NFLAlumni and @CDC_cancer to raise awareness. Let’s protect the people we love, Kansas City and #GearUpAgainstCancer.https://t.co/kro1ZLUEeGpic.twitter.com/uNjAzZaJ4U

The Chiefs' impressive 10-year playoff streak, which included seven straight AFC Championship appearances, ended with the conclusion of the 2025 season, marking their first postseason absence since 2014 after finishing 6-11. Pearson weighed in on the team's mindset that led to the disappointing year.

"I think hunger is a part of it. Some guys on this team have only been to a Super Bowl. They don't know anything else," said Pearson. "This is the first, and you know how hard it is to get to the playoffs, let alone the Super Bowl. It's crazy, and some of these guys, that's all they know up until now. So they've never encountered that adversity."

Kansas City ended the longest active playoff run in the NFL and experienced a significant drop after its recent Super Bowl success. During the run, multiple players had never experienced anything less than an AFC Championship game appearance.

"If you come into the league and all you know is going to the Super Bowl, you expect, oh, it's going to be easy. We're going to the Super Bowl," said Pearson, "So, if that's the case, I think you get it's easy to get complacent and think that's how it's supposed to be, and that that's far from it, and so I think they see that now."
