This week, Chiefs Wire's Ed Easton Jr. spoke with the President of the NFL Alumni Kansas City Chapter and Kansas City Chiefs legend J.C. Pearson.
In his interview with Easton Jr., Pearson discussed his role as an NFL Alumni ambassador for the 'GEAR UP Against Cancer'campaign's fight against lung cancer, in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Division of Cancer Prevention and Control. He also commented on Travis Kelce's future after completing his 13th NFL season.
"We just want to try to help and do our part in terms of getting the awareness out," said Pearson, "Smoking, in particular, if you smoke, first of all, don't smoke, and if you do, then get checked out."
After an eleventh consecutive selection to the Pro Bowl, Travis Kelce is considering a possible retirement. Pearson weighed in on the franchise-changing decision for the long-time tight end.
"You've got nothing left to prove. You've done it all in your Hall of Fame career; you had so much going on off the field. You've got nothing to prove. So why come back and put yourself through it? I don't care who you are; it still takes a couple of years to get that competitiveness out of you, said Pearson. "He's the ultimate competitor; putting himself through that again has to be his decision. Now there's nothing to say to, that he has to come back right now and go through training camp and all that, he might wait till the season starts and see where this team is at, see how Pat (Patrick Mahomes) comes back, and then come back at that time."
Kelce was the top offensive receiving target all season for the Chiefs. The 36-year-old continued to find ways to get open and got into the best shape of his career.
"We've seen that happen also, but that gives him more time to rest up, get that fire burning again, because he's going to have a long off-season getting married and all that kind of stuff. I can see it both ways, if he wants to come back, he can still come back and be at a high level, but he's got nothing else to prove to anybody but himself," said Pearson, "Once you say you're done, and you always have that burning desire of maybe I should have stayed an extra year. Maybe I could have gone back and done it again. So if he has all that out of him, then fine. But if he doesn't, then like we used to say, man, go to the wheels fall off, and go from there. So I can see it both ways."
The multiple-time All-Pro was a bright spot in a forgettable season. Pearson believes Kelce will need to consider his options this offseason seriously.
"I think he's got to sit back and have an honest conversation with this organization to see where they're going to be next year. What type of team are they going to have, because there's nothing to say that next year they're going to go back to the playoffs or have a Super Bowl run," said Pearson, "It could be another year like this year. It could be worse. In this environment, you don't want to come back and go through another losing season. In the last few games, Pat obviously wasn't there with him, and he looked down. He looked frustrated, like, Man, I'm just ready to get this thing over with."
