Isiah Kiner-Falefa Expands On Remarks Blaming Big Market For Home Struggles originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Boston Red Sox are 9-20 at Fenway Park this season. It's their worst home record in nearly 100 years.
The odd part is that the team has been relatively effective on the road, winning 16 of their 30 road games.
Fans are understandably growing very frustrated with the inability to win on their home turf.
The players themselves are frustrated as well. Utility man Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who is playing his best baseball of the year, explained to reporters on Tuesday that he feels like the team is closer when they are on the road.
His comments made headlines, and he was asked to expand on the idea on Wednesday before Game 2 of the home series against the Baltimore Orioles.
"Everything on the road is a lot smaller. Here, it’s a big market at home and a lot going on, and we just have to do a better job as a team to make it smaller," Kiner-Falefa said. "We haven’t played well at home. We’re trying different things and looking into different things. Everybody here’s treated me well; it’s a great group. We just have to find a way to translate it here at home."
It is clear that Kiner-Falefa is feeling the heat from Red Sox fans who may have felt insulted by his previous comments. The newcomer made sure to explain that the pressure generated in Fenway is a privilege.
"This is what you dream of (but) there’s a lot going on. On the road, it’s just our small group," Kiner-Falefa said. "It’s part of playing in a big market. It’s what I signed up for. It’s what a lot of us dream of. Being able to put this jersey on, it means the world to us. Playing in Fenway, it’s like a golden ticket."
